Is PRFM the same as PRP?
To understand PRFM, you must know about the basics behind platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which is most commonly used in the popular Vampire Facelift®. During a vampire facial, doctors use your own blood to revitalize your skin.

First, Dr. Bartolome uses microneedling — a minimally invasive procedure in which a machine creates tiny punctures in your face to promote collagen production — to prepare your skin for PRP injections.

Next, Dr. Bartolome takes a vial of your blood, which is then spun through a centrifuge to remove your white and red blood cells and harness the healing power of your body’s PRP. Once the PRP is placed on your face, it helps to stimulate collagen, plump up your skin, and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

PRFM is not only used with microneedling, but preferably injected with a small cannula into problem areas such as under the eyes, midface and lower face such as marionette lines. It is more often coupled with ha laser or heat treatment to induce dermal injury and therefore new collagen called neocollagenesis.

Dr. Bartolome and the team at About Face Hawaii also offer Nitronox, which provides analgesia for patient to tolerate and feel reduced pain and discomfort during treatment.

How is PRFM different from PRP?
PRFM works much in the same way as PRP, but it takes the process one step further to produce the absolute highest concentration of PRP plasma possible.

Many PRP systems require operator skills, meaning there is typically some contamination of white blood cells and red blood cells — known to have inflammatory side effects — in the syringe. Because PRFM is entirely independent of operator skills, this contamination is completely removed.

Through a controlled process, PRP is converted to PRFM, which protects the platelets at the site of injection, so the release of their growth factors can be sustained for a much longer period of time than traditional PRP treatments.

What conditions can PRFM treat?
What truly sets PRFM apart from traditional PRP treatments is its versatility. While PRP injections are used to promote collagen production in the skin to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, PRFM treatments can:

  • Minimize fine lines and wrinkles
  • Promote collagen production and skin elasticity
  • Stimulate hair growth in patients with hair loss
  • Add skin volume
  • Reduce the appearance of scars
  • Even out skin tone

Many patients view PRFM as the next generation of PRP treatments, however, its ability to restore hair growth makes the treatment truly unique.

Each PRFM treatment, including PRFM hair loss restoration, takes under an hour and requires very minimal downtime — perfect for those who want to see dramatic results without going under the knife.
